Sherwood Maritime is an independent Marine Consultancy based in Chichester on the South Coast of England.

Maritime Cyber Security

 

We help ports, marine facilities, and ship operators to protect their organisations, vessels and systems with Cyber Security certification designed to meet industry and the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO's) requirements.

Risk Assessment and Safety Management Systems

From providing guidance to fully authoring documentation, we are able to collaboratively assist in the development of Marine Safety Management Systems that are tailored to your organisation.  We are also able to assist with Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment for your organisation, or provide Navigational Risk Assessment for your project.

Marine Engineering Consultancy

Our experienced engineering consultants are able to assist with surveying including On and Off-Hire Condition Surveys, ISM Code Implementation, developing and managing Planned Maintenance Systems, and providing Technical Auditing and Advice.

Yacht and Small Craft Survey

 

We provide range of yacht and small craft surveys, all independently quality assured by an IIMS surveyor and underwritten by a comprehensive Marine Trades Insurance Policy.

Expert Witness Services

 

Our Maritime Expert Witness services are delivered by professionals trained by Bond Solon, the UK’s leading authority on expert witness practice. We provide clear, impartial, and court-compliant expert opinion across maritime safety, navigation, pilotage, port operations, maritime security, and marine governance.

Managing Director and 
Principal Consultant

Gideon Sherwood     HM Cert AFNI

Gideon is a marine professional with over 26 years’ experience combining 16 years in the Royal Navy and 10 years in Port Operations including as a Harbour Master. He is an Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute, a member of the UK Maritime Pilots' Association, a holder of the United Kingdom Harbour Masters’ Association  (UKHMA) Certificate of Competence, and an ISM Lead Auditor.  Gideon is currently on the Council of the UKHMA as the Associate Member representative. He has extensive experience in Marine Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment; Marine Accident and Incident Investigation; Expert Witness reporting and cross-examination; provision of specialist advice to and involvement in marine infrastructure projects: Marine Safety Management System development and operation; provision of Vessel Traffic Services; and Pilotage and Towage.

Small Craft Surveyor and 
Principal Consultant

James Gould             AFRIN

James has over 30 years’ experience across a diverse and highly specialised maritime career. He served 13 years in the Royal Navy, including periods in command, specialising in advanced navigation. He continues to support the Royal Navy as a reservist, contributing to pilotage training and autonomous vessel trials.Following his naval service, James managed and conducted vessel trials and acceptance programmes worldwide, predominantly for government clients, alongside the instruction and qualification of vessel operators. An accomplished yachtsman, he has completed  transatlantic and transpacific crossings and has maintained a lifelong passion for boats and yachts. James is an Unlimited Admiralty Pilot with extensive experience in pilotage and project towage. He is a member of the UK Marine Pilots’ Association, a Small Craft Marine Surveyor, and an Associate Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation.
